Share this: Visiting the Casa do Alentejo (house of Alentejo) felt like stepping right into Morocco, but right in the heart of downtown Lisbon. ? ? This is intentional – Portugal is closer to North Africa than it is to most of Western Europe! ? ? A lot of Portuguese architecture, food & culture was heavily influenced by the presence of the Moors (the Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb) between the 8th and the 14th centuries. ? ? Sardines, cod, octopus.. whatever you like you can find here in beautiful tins covering the walls of popular tourist shops. ? ? The history of Portugal meant for a long time, people survived mostly off preserved and easy to aqquire foods. Being a coast nation, seafood is a big part of that. ? ? But it was only in recent years an entreprenurial business man rebranded tinned fish, put them in colourful tins, and decided to sell to tourists. ? ?
