I'll never get tired of wandering the beautiful, colourful streets of Oaxaca city. ? ? In many places I've been to, it's just one or two streets which look like this. But in oaxaca, it's all of the central city. ? ?
This Spanish church was built on the ruins of Mitla, using its own stone and colours. A very sad story, but an immensely beautiful building too.
People always assume a wedge of lime and some salt for tequila.. but this is not the right flavour combo for mezcal. ? ? Ideally, no citrus. But if you must – a wedge of sweeter, less acidic orange in between sips is the way to go. ? ?
The Xochimilco Aqueduct was built from 1727-1751 and was designed to bring fresh drinking water from the hillsides of Cerro de San Felipe into downtown Oaxaca. ? ? It's no longer used (it was replaced in 1940 with a more modern solution) but you can follow its trail and spy houses, restaurants & shops tucked away underneath. ? ?
It's not a trip to CDMX without stopping in at the original Churrería El Moro. ? ? It's been here since 1910, and is open 24 hrs, 7 days a week for all your hot chocolate & churro needs. ? ?
Part of the reason Mezcal can have such a smokey flavour is because the piña (heart of the agave) are smoked in these huge fire pits. ? ?
The archeological ruins of Mitla are not far outside the city of Oaxaca, and a fascinating site to visit. ? ? Mitla means place of the underworld.? ? This was the most important site of the Zapotec culture and expresses the Mesoamerican belief that death was the most consequential part of life after birth.? ?
Every time I visit Oaxaca I learn something new. This trip, was a Mezcal discovery trip for me. ? ? I'd tried a lot of espadin mezcals before, but never those made from various varieties of wild agave. ? ? Everyone has different tastes & preferences, but for me, the wild agave mezcals blew me away and are by far my favourites. ? ? Here's a wild agave plant in the hillsides outside the town of Mitla in the state of Oaxaca. ? ?
